Kids Check-ups

Kids Dental Check-Ups

How Often Should My Child See a Dentist?

We generally recommend that children see a dentist every six months for a full check-up and professional dental cleaning. This schedule allows for early detection of potential concerns and supports a preventive approach to dental care.

Why Do Children Need Regular Dental Checkups?

Routine check-ups help us monitor your child’s oral health and identify any changes before they cause discomfort. Early detection can allow for more conservative treatment and may reduce the likelihood of more complex dental procedures later on. Preventive care is an important step in helping manage the risk of conditions like tooth decay (caries) and gum disease (periodontal disease).

What to Expect at Your Child’s First Visit

At Dr Smile, your child’s first visit includes a comprehensive oral health assessment and a gentle examination of their teeth and gums. We will also review their medical history and assess their risk of future dental issues. Using this information, we create a personalised preventive care plan that includes recommended visit frequency and may suggest additional preventive measures such as fissure sealants or topical fluoride treatment.

Our team will discuss all findings with you and, when appropriate, with your child in age-appropriate language. This helps your child feel informed and included in their care. If any treatment is recommended, we’ll explain what it involves and how it may benefit your child’s oral health.

Will My Child Need X-Rays?

Dental x-rays may be taken when clinically necessary. They help us assess tooth and jaw development and detect issues that may not be visible during a standard examination. We use digital x-rays and follow safety guidelines, only recommending them when indicated by your child’s dental condition.

Professional Cleaning (Scale and Polish)

Children can benefit from professional dental cleaning, which helps remove hardened plaque (calculus) and supports gum health. This is a non-invasive procedure typically well tolerated by children. Once cleaned, the teeth are gently polished. Regular cleanings are an important part of preventive dental care and complement your child’s home brushing and flossing routine.

All treatments and procedures come with risks – please discuss these with your practitioner before treatment.
